Common Ground Publishing

Services: Sales Manager for Western Canada

Common Ground Publishing is an independent, 100% Canadian-owned media company and one of Western Canada’s pioneering publications dedicated to natural health, wellness, ecology, sustainability and personal growth.

Founded in Vancouver in 1982, Common Ground emerged well before health, environmental responsibility and conscious living became mainstream consumer trends. The publication developed a distinctive position at the intersection of natural health, environmental awareness, personal development, progressive culture and socially responsible business, connecting an engaged readership with organizations, practitioners, retailers and emerging brands operating within these rapidly developing sectors.

Distributed throughout Western Canada and supported primarily through advertising, Common Ground became an important communications platform for the natural-health and wellness community. Its longevity and loyal readership ultimately established it as one of the region’s most recognized independent publications within these categories.

Sales Manager – Western Canada

February 1995 – January 1998 | 3 years | Vancouver, British Columbia

Led advertising sales, client development and revenue growth across Western Canada during an important period of expansion for Common Ground.

Managed a three-person sales team while developing relationships with advertisers spanning the natural-products, health and wellness, environmental, personal-development, education, retail and professional-services sectors.

The position combined strategic account development, sales-team leadership, advertising inventory management and long-term relationship building, with responsibility for maximizing the commercial value of the publication’s most prominent advertising positions.

Key Achievements

  • Became the first sales manager in company history to pre-sell 100% of cover and premium advertising positions for the following 12 months, providing exceptional forward revenue visibility and demonstrating strong advertiser demand and client retention.
  • Consistently exceeded individual and departmental sales targets, contributing to sustained year-over-year advertising revenue growth.
  • Managed and developed a three-person advertising sales team, establishing sales objectives, prospecting priorities, account-management disciplines and performance expectations.
  • Developed and executed high-performing advertising sales campaigns that generated double-digit year-over-year revenue growth and strengthened the publication’s commercial position across Western Canada.
  • Built enduring relationships with businesses operating in the emerging natural-health, wellness, organic, environmental and conscious-living sectors, many of which were developing alongside rapidly changing consumer preferences.
  • Expanded the advertiser base through proactive new-business development, identifying organizations whose products, services and values closely aligned with Common Ground’s readership.
  • Created strategic advertising packages combining premium positions, recurring placements and long-term commitments, increasing advertiser retention while improving revenue predictability.
  • Managed scarce premium advertising inventory to maximize both client value and publication revenue, particularly highly sought-after cover and prominent display positions.
  • Worked closely with advertisers to understand their marketing objectives and develop customized campaigns and placement strategies designed to improve visibility, readership engagement and response.
  • Strengthened advertiser loyalty by moving beyond transactional advertising sales toward consultative, long-term client partnerships.
  • Helped connect emerging health, wellness and environmentally conscious businesses with a highly targeted consumer audience at a time when these categories were moving steadily toward broader mainstream acceptance.

Leadership & Commercial Impact

The role represented an important stage in the development of a consultative and relationship-driven approach to sales.

Selling advertising required more than filling available space. It involved understanding a client’s business, identifying its target customer, developing an appropriate communications strategy and demonstrating how Common Ground could provide meaningful access to an engaged and highly defined audience.

The achievement of selling every premium and cover advertising position one full year in advance was particularly significant. It demonstrated the ability to create demand, build client confidence, secure long-term commitments and convert limited advertising inventory into predictable future revenue.

It also provided early exposure to industries that would become central throughout a subsequent career in consumer-packaged goods: natural products, health and wellness, sustainability, organic foods and values-driven consumer brands.

Hartley Berg fulfilled the role of Western Canadian Sales Manager at Common Ground Publishing for a period of three years.

Having been a member of his sales team, I can attest that Hartley Berg knows how to sell advertising! He consistently achieved the company’s highest advertising sales revenue and for the first time in the company’s history, he pre-sold all cover and premium pages 12 months in advance. Up-selling existing clients is his specialty. Also for the first time, Hartley sold national advertisers into the magazine. He works effectively with his clients and maintains a professional work ethic.

In his role, Hartley organized and chaired weekly motivational and informative sales training meetings where he provided innovative sales tools. Additionally, he implemented administration and software systems to optimize sales and service.

Hartley clearly displays a very positive approach in his personal and professional life. He is performance driven, and possesses an outstanding standard of excellence in client-service relations and the prospecting of new business.

Hartley’s skills and dedication resulted in positive growth for Common Ground Publications. I would not hesitate to recommend Hartley as a cooperative team player and effective leader.
